Maritime Surveying in Portugal
and the Atlantic Corridor

From the Port of Bilbao to Gibraltar and beyond. Independent surveys conducted by a Deep Sea Captain with 20 years at sea: no commercial ties, no conflicts, and findings your P&I club, insurer, and legal team can rely on.

Independent surveying

What makes a survey genuinely independent?

When a marine survey is conducted by someone with no commercial relationship to the broker, shipyard, or insurer in a transaction, the result is different. The surveyor’s only obligation is accuracy.

M.A. Marine Veritas Consulting offers independent advisory marine surveys across the Portuguese coast and the Atlantic corridor, conducted by Mykola Aleksyeyev: a certified Deep Sea Captain and Marine Surveyor with two decades of hands-on experience across every major vessel type.

Survey reports from MAMVC are structured for use by owners, charterers, P&I clubs, underwriters, and courts. Findings are documented in forensic detail. Not softened for sellers, not shaped by relationships.

If a vessel has a problem, you will know exactly what it is, where it is, and what it will cost to fix. That is the only standard we work to.

Survey services

What we survey

Eight survey disciplines, all conducted to the applicable class, flag state, and industry standards.

01

Condition Survey

A comprehensive assessment of a vessel’s current state: hull integrity, machinery, safety equipment, navigational systems, and documentation. The foundation for any informed decision about purchase, insurance, or financing.

02

Pre-Purchase Survey

For buyers who need certainty before committing capital. We identify structural defects, concealed corrosion, mechanical wear, and documentation irregularities the seller hopes you will miss. A pre-purchase survey frequently saves multiples of its fee.

03

On-hire / Off-hire Survey

An impartial record of a vessel’s condition at the commencement and conclusion of a charter party. Protects owners and charterers alike from disputed cargo claims and contested redelivery conditions.

04

Damage Survey (P&I)

Forensic assessment of casualty or cargo damage. Complete photographic evidence, cause and extent analysis, root-cause determination, and a report structured to withstand legal or insurance scrutiny. Available on short notice.

05

Pre-RightShip and RightShip Inspections

Pre-inspection assessment and full RightShip vetting support to ensure your vessel meets the standards required by charterers and cargo owners. Identifies deficiencies before the formal inspection so owners can address findings in advance and protect the vessel rating.

06

Flag State Inspection Support

Pre-inspection preparation, accompaniment during official examinations, and remediation guidance following any findings. Fewer surprises. Fewer detentions.

07

Insurance / Valuation Survey

Independent physical inspection and market valuation for insurance placement, financing, or dispute resolution. Based on current market data, vessel condition, and comparable transaction analysis.

Portugal and the Atlantic Corridor

Portugal occupies a position of structural importance on the Atlantic corridor: the principal route connecting northern European ranges with southern European, West African, and transatlantic trades. Every vessel calling at a Portuguese port, or transiting the waters between Rotterdam and the Canary Islands, operates within our primary survey range.

Sines is Portugal’s largest deep-water terminal, handling container, bulk, liquid bulk, and cruise traffic at scale. Leixões is the principal gateway for northern Portugal and the western Iberian seaboard. Funchal and Ponta Delgada serve as Atlantic waypoints for vessels on transatlantic and West African trades.

Vessel types

Surveyed across every major commercial type

Mykola Aleksyeyev has served as Master or senior officer aboard ConRo ships, PCTC and PCC car carriers, Ro-Ro and RoPax fleets, VLCC tankers, and heavy-lift project cargo vessels. That operational depth means he knows not only what a defect looks like on paper. He knows what it looks and feels like from the wheelhouse, the engine room, and the cargo deck.

Dry-docking

Ramp load tests and dry-dock supervision

A dry-dock is where problems that cannot be found at sea become visible. MAMVC provides on-site supervision from initial floating inspection through the full dry-dock period: structural steel assessment, ramp and ramp mechanism load testing, underwater hull coating and cathodic protection, propeller and rudder inspection, sea chest and valve surveys, and final undocking checks.

Reports are issued before vessels are redelivered so that owners and managers have documented evidence of condition at the moment the vessel leaves the dock.

Our approach

Why independence is everything in marine surveying

Most damage surveys, pre-purchase inspections, and vessel appraisals are conducted by surveyors with an ongoing commercial relationship with someone in the transaction. That relationship shapes findings. Not through dishonesty, but through the quiet pull of repeat business.

At MAMVC, there are no such relationships. We hold no panel appointments with specific P&I clubs, brokers, or shipyards. We work on no retainer with any owner group. Our fee comes from the person who engaged us, and our obligation runs exclusively to factual accuracy.

That independence is not a marketing position. It is structural. It is the reason our reports can be submitted to arbitration, used in legal proceedings, and accepted by underwriters who have seen too many surveys shaped by convenience.

“The sea does not grade on effort. It grades on outcome.”

Mykola Aleksyeyev, MAMVC

A zero PSC detention record during safety superintendent operations at Bahri. 100% vetting success across fleets. These are the results of the same principle applied operationally: find the real problem, state it plainly, fix it before someone else does.

Early honest advice consistently prevents costly later problems. That is the professional standard we hold in every survey we conduct.

Tank and void space inspection

Inside the vessel: fuel oil and ballast tank surveys

A survey that stops at the outer hull sees less than half the picture. The corrosion, the structural fatigue, the coating failures that drive future repair costs live inside the tanks and void spaces. MAMVC conducts physical inspections of fuel oil tanks, ballast tanks, cargo holds, and void spaces as standard practice, not as an optional add-on.

Every compartment is entered, photographically documented, and assessed against class standards. Findings reference exact frame numbers and measurement points so that the owner, the manager, and the insurer are working from the same documented reality.

The person behind the practice

Get to know Mykola

Mykola Aleksyeyev grew up in Ukraine with a grandfather who captained vessels and built a business from nothing. At fourteen, he applied to marine college. Not because anyone told him to, but because the sea made sense to him in a way that little else did. His grandfather wanted him to be a lawyer.

Five years at the Marine Academy. A cadet billet on a fishing boat. Then a progression through the ranks on vessels that operated across every ocean: Chief Officer, then Master, then the kind of responsibility that arrives when a company trusts you with a vessel worth tens of millions of dollars and a crew whose safety depends entirely on your judgement.

Twenty years later, he is based at the Port of Leixões in Porto, one of Europe’s most strategically positioned maritime hubs, and he brings that full operational depth to every survey he conducts. He has stood watches through the Strait of Gibraltar, handled complex heavy-lift operations, managed dry-dockings on VLCC tankers, and investigated P&I claims across multiple jurisdictions on behalf of owners, insurers, and P&I clubs.

What he brings to a survey is not a clipboard and a checklist. It is the instinct of someone who has been on the ship when things go wrong: who knows the difference between a genuine repair and a cosmetic one, between a system that is functioning and one that is functioning well enough for the survey.

He reads every report he issues. Nothing is outsourced.
